λείχειν, leichein, to lick, 2022

As the word lichen derives from the greek noun λείχειν leichein, meaning “to lick”, one can imagine lichen, being a pioneer species, as someone who licks all kinds of raw surfaces on our planet. Lichen is a being of several organisms coexisting in one body; a stable symbiotic association between fungus and algae. Lichens are fungi that have discovered agriculture. Lichens are algae using fungi as host to see the world. The video shows a species of lichen (Cladonia fimbriata) captured by photogrammetry and revisited as an isolated piece of virtual landscape.

Video shown in the exhibition Such stuff as worlds are made on in Spazju Kreattiv in Malta,
and in the exhibitino Rhizome at Søgne Gamle Prestegård, Kristiansand.
